Office in a Box

Summer school is an intense period of 18 school days where you attempt at teaching an entire course. Unlike the regular school year, you do not receive any prep time and essentially teach from 8:30-3:15 straight with only a small break for lunch (like 35 minutes….). Last year I spent every evening working til about 11:30pm, working on powerpoints and creating lessons. This year was significantly easier because I was repeating the same program as last year.

Now I do ‘change things up’ and switch lessons around, update things (for example, Jack Layton was in my slides) and create new assignments. But the big parts of the course are done. One thing that I did that helped keep me organized is buying an ‘office in a box’. This held file folders that were colour coordinated to represent lessons/days and assignments. Everything was spread out through the 18 days and it made photocopying/prepping quite a bit easier. It also helped me organize my paperwork at the end of the summer as everything was there (we have to assemble a package that is kept on-file).

Yes – that is a McMaster pencil case….

On Friday, I cleaned up the files a bit and now they are ready to be put in a file folder-holder on my teaching-resources shelf (yes, I do have one of those). So the next time I teach this course, it is ready to go again.

Because I was a bit more organized this year, I didn’t work my butt off. I even took a couple of ‘nights off’. I also did not take an Ottawa University course this summer, so that has much to do with it as well. I felt better, more organized and I think I taught a bit better.

See….being organized pays off sometimes :-)

Farm Boy Trip

Last week a new Farm Boy location opened up close to Place d’Orleans in Orleans. For those who are not from the Ottawa area, Farm Boy is a chain of grocery stores that specializes in quality produce, meats, cheeses and bakery items. They also have a killer ‘fast food’ section where you can get a variety of foods to pick up. The new location at Place has a salad bar – one of the few places around that has a ‘to-go’ salad bar.

The best part about the new Farm Boy is the fact that it is just a few minutes from my house. It is a 2 minute drive, or a 10-15 minute walk. The highway separates my house from the Place d’Orleans area, but I live really close to the OCTranspo Park and Ride, so it is easy to just cross using the OC path that goes over the 174.

Using the paths around my house, the mall (Place d’Orleans) and a few quick minutes outside, I can be at Farm Boy fairly quickly.

Here we are entering Place

Then an elevator ride

Quick walk at Place

We did lock up the Chariot for safe keeping.

Max is now happy!

We picked up some veggies, peaches, cheese (St. Alberts, yum), and Farm Boy Hummus and Tomato Sauce with Fresh Basil (meaning you can see the green – not some dried stuff).

I may have also had a Pear-Almond muffin…….

If you live in Ottawa I highly recommend Farm Boy for your grocery needs!

Summer School is Done!

Today is the last day of summer school! It is an easy day of showing marks to the handful of kids that show up, assembling a package of paperwork that sits in an office in downtown in case anyone complains of said marks, and then eating a potluck lunch! I am bringing a veggie tray with hummus as a dip for my contribution.

Since this was my first month back at work off of maternity leave, there are a few things to reflect upon:

1) Television? What is that?

I have almost zero time for TV. I come home, nurse Max, eat dinner, go have a bath/play, put Max to bed and then work for a couple of hours. I maybe watch 10-15 minutes of TV if I’m lucky.

2) Routine, Routine, Routine

Although Max doesn’t have a set routine, we are slowly starting to evolve towards it. Although I don’t care what happens at night – mornings have to happen a certain way. However, once regular school starts up, I have a bit more freedom in the morning since CW doesn’t start til 9:15 (I start at 8:30 now). If something goes out of wack, I can become majorly late!

3) I am envious of anyone who has time to work out, go on runs, have free time.

Free time? What is that? Yeah…..zero free time. I’ve had to re-schedule my hair appointment 3x this month because of it. However, interviewing daycares has had quite a bit to do with that as well. I haven’t been on a run since Warrior Dash nor have I worked out. For those of you that do have the time to work out, get nails done, go to a patio and have a drink – yeah….kinda hate you *just a little* (I am kidding though….)

Now saying all that, when I go back to school things will be a bit easier. I will be running with my Cross Country team – and since daycare is open til 5pm, if I want to start going to the gym or doing a run by myself, I can. The wonderful thing about working in the same neighbourhood that I live in, is that I can get a crazy amount accomplished before 5pm.

4) Insomnia is gone!

Not having as much trouble sleeping as I did. However, the lack of sleeping in on the weekends is a downer. I should also get in the habit of going to bet a bit earlier too.

5) Bit worried about the Fall

My worries are not about daycare or leaving Max or any of that stuff – it is the amount of work that needs to be done. Not only am I teaching new courses – but I am also taking a Ottawa U grad course, probably going back to orchestra and my coaching duties will be starting again. I will be very busy. I am *kinda* hoping that I stay part-time for the first bit or if I do take a third class on, it is something I have taught before.

All in all, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. If I wasn’t going away every weekend, I would have had a MUCH easier time. The time did go by fast – and I also don’t think that Max noticed that I was gone :-)

Have a wonderful weekend

Three Things Thursday

Yesterday was a bit too chaotic to get a blog post in. But since it is Thursday, I just *have* to write a Three Things Thursday Post

1. We are in the process of finding a daycare for Max. It has been a very interesting process. Since neither P or I were in daycare as children (both of our Moms said home – well mine did during the day) we don’t really have anything to go on in terms of what to expect. We have visited a few, but kind of narrowed it down to two. Just checking on a couple things and we hope to get this figured out soon!  It is kind of sad that it is time for this already. Max will be starting daycare in a month, which gave me about 8.5 months of mat leave. It went by fast!

2. Saw the Dark Knight Rises on Saturday – oh my!  As usual this latest edition to the recent Batman Trilogy didn’t disappoint. I am impressed with Anne Hathaway’s performance of Catwoman and Bane’s voice still creeps me out! The ending left me wanting more and I am disappointed that there will be no more in this version of Batman.

3. Tried the Asiago and Artichoke dip made by President’s Choice – YUM. One of my lunch faves right now. I eat it with those baguette crackers. Delicious!

Warrior Dash Ontario: A Review

Although I do like road races, they are becoming less interesting and (for me) more about timing/PB’s than anything else. The Colonel By/Queen Elizabeth Drive course is becoming so familiar that I know every curve, and even most homes/buildings.

Last year, P and I heard about the Warrior Dash – a trial race that features some intense obstacles in addition to running a very hilly course. Because I was pregnant, I did not get to run the race because it is a little dangerous compared to a typical 5K. I saw that Ontario would have a race, and we quickly signed up.

The race was great and I believe that if the scheduling allows for it – we will run it again next year (or the Spartan Race which is very similar).

Here is my review of the race:

 Getting to the Race

The race was just a few minutes from Barrie. We stayed at my parents house and planned to travel up Saturday morning. Wanting to be there for 12:30pm, we left at 10am, giving us more than enough time to make the trek to Barrie (usually a 1 hour drive). We got stuck in traffic.

It ended up taking us 2.5 hours to get to the site, getting us there a mere 45 minutes before race time. Problem with that? We needed to park off-site, get our race packs and eat something.

It was a bit tight, but we made it. We managed to park and get our race kits, but eating did not happen. The Warrior Dash people did say that we could race in another wave if we didn’t make it, but that would have complicated things in terms of Max (who was at my parents house). Luckily the ride to the location and the race kit pick-up took only a few minutes and we managed to get to the start line with approximately 15 minutes to spare.

Funny thing – on the way home, it only took us 1 hour and 10 minutes……

 The Race Course

You want to run this race? Do lots of hill training. I am not talking about the type of training that you might do over an overpass, or running up Green’s Creek in Ottawa (tobaggon hill by highway 174). I am talking about ski hills, big hills, steep hills. The hills were intense! Obstacles? Not so much.

The race started and we were introduced to a bit of trail running. Apparently they start the race with about 1 mile of straight running to try and break up the pack a bit. There were a few muddy sections where people lost their shoes, but nothing too major. We went up and down for a bit before we hit our first big hill in the trees. Once the hill appeared, many people started walking, including myself. Because of my knee issue last week and the fact that I am in the middle of training for a half-marathon, I chose to take it easy on the hills. However, some of the hills were so steep that even if I was being competitive, I would have had to walk up the hill. Even the downhills required some walking! Just before the first obstacle was one little downhill section that had people hanging on to neighbouring trees.

The obstacles that were listed on the official website were not the same ones that appeared on the course. Not sure why, but it didn’t really matter. However, my memory of the obstacles may be a bit off.

The first obstacle was a series of wooden platforms that you needed to climb over. They were similar to those steeple chase hurdles. They were not too bad, but the last couple were really high. We ran for a bit more and then had to go under some barbed wire (fun!) this required you to either army crawl or go on your hands and knees, so again no running at this point. There was some more trial running with some brutal hills. The last hill before the first water break was intense. At this point P said he needed to slow down a bit because he was over-heating. Looking behind me at several points, I could see a bunch of tired-looking people who were walking up the hills (I was walking too).

At the water break, I took an actual break (meaning I stopped) and waited for P. The big reason for this is the next section of the hill to the top of the ski lift was right in the sun and fairly steep. So, a break was taken and it helped me get up that hill. Once at the top, it was time to go down. By going down, I mean quite literally going down the ski hill. All I can say is thank goodness it wasn’t wet! A bunch of us were sliding down the hill and it was fairly tricky. There was absolutely no way that I was going to run down this hill unless I wanted to be like those cheese rolling runners at Cooper’s Hill. No, thanks!

The next obstacle after that was the ‘teetering traverse’ which P attempted first. That part made him a bit nervous or something because it took him awhile to get across. At first I charged up, but then realized the wood was a little woobly, so I slowed down. I got to the top and then stopped and said “well how the hell am I supposed to get down?” as it was like a slide. So, on my bum I went! It worked.

I believe the next obstacle was going under logs and barbed wire, which I did slow because of the knees. After that was one heck of a hill, followed by another water break. Once the break was down, the ground covering was fairly flat so I started running again. Next obstacle was a climb up a wall with aided by a rope. It wasn’t too bad. This was followed by a rope crossing that I saw lots of people having difficulty with. This one I charged through.

After I think one more hill, there was someone at the top saying that it was downhill for the rest. So I started booking it. The next obstacle was some sort of garbage bag slip n’ slide? Not sure what it was, but I just walked through it? This was followed by another climb up a ladder (easy), a cargo net (easy) and then the last two obstacles. The second last obstacle was a fire jump which was fun – I may have ‘hurdled’ it. The last stage was the famous mud pit with barbed wire overhead. The mud was thick! It was definitely the best obstacle in my mind! It wasn’t easy and it was really hard to stay upright! You also have no choice but to get muddy!

The mud pit is essentially at the finish line. Just get out, cross the ‘mats’ (I think they were there – was kinda hard to tell under all the mud) and boom done. I waited for P who came in about a minute and a half later.

All in all – the hills were brutal, but the obstacles were not. Not sure if the drought conditions had anything to do with it, but I felt that the obstacles were not hard at all, just fun. I was joking that the race should be called the ‘Warrior Hike’, since at the 1.5 mile mark it seemed that everyone was walking. Another thing I would like to add is that unlike road races in the city, this race was pretty quiet. I am not used to hearing everyone’s panting and heavy breathing. Also, because of the way the race is set up, you only race with a ‘handful’ of people (compared to 5000+ for big road races). It was a bit more fun to have a bunch of ‘buddies’ take part in the race.

 Results

I honestly thought I did shitty. I was hungry, hot and really not prepared for the hills. When the results were posted, I automatically looked at the bottom. When I couldn’t find my name easily, I hit the ‘find’ button. Surprisngly I came in 625/1265 for my age/sex category and 3757/6609 overall. My time was 53:21. For comparison purposes, the top time was 23:38 for a male runner. Usually for road races, the top runner is under 16 minutes (and I know I am under-estimating). Not bad for my first time! I think I can definitely go faster next time and probably hit the 45 minute mark.

 Food

After the race we needed food badly. We got a free beer (Coors light tall-boy) for finishing (bonus!), but still needed some eats. We got a turkey leg, sausage and corn on the cob. My Dad’s company supplied the bananas at the finish line (almost 100 cases) and the corn on the cob. We were very lucky and got the last two pieces of corn! The food hit the spot for sure. The turkey leg was really good but super big for me.

There was lots of music provided and it seemed that many people were making a day of it. I think that we want to spend more time next year at the race and just bring Max with us. We could easily sign up for different waves so that one of us could sit with Max.

Overall

I think that I will do this race again, but put a bit more effort in. Like many of my ‘racing firsts’ I took a cautious route and played it safe. Now that I know how the race is designed I can visualize it a bit better which will mean training a bit more differently for it. I also think I need to book it more during the flatter parts and not sit around the water cooler (ha!).

Other than the $20 parking fee and lack of Corn on the Cob, the Warrior Dash people had a great event. I strongly suggest that if you like to run and get muddy – to try this race!

 Now some pictures!

Pre-Race: Warrior Dash

Tomorrow, both P and I are running the Warrior Dash in Barrie. If you don’t know what that race means – in a basic sense it is a approx. 5.5K race involving a series of obstacles. Obstacles include jumping over fire, flying down a muddy ski hill, and leaping over wooden structures. The race is being held at Horseshoe Valley, a Barrie-area ski hill. A similar race is the Spartan Race

We wanted to do this race last year, but being 6 months pregnant meant a no-go. When we saw that it was coming to Ontario again, we quickly signed up for Saturday. The race runs in waves in order to keep the crowds down, so we are running at 1:30pm.

The race is also different because other than the standard medal and t-shirt, you also get a Warrior Hat and a beer at the end of the race. Super cool!  The price to enter was very reasonable compared to my other races.

I’m not too sure what to expect for this race, so the plan is to just have fun and get muddy! I am a bit worried that the fire element will be cancelled due to the drought conditions currently being experience across Ontario, but we will see. I am also wondering if there is a bag check, because this is a race where you don’t bring anything that you don’t want to get muddy – and we will have car keys + we need our ID to pick up our packs. I’m pretty sure there will be. Parking is supposed to be insane and we need to park off-site and be shuttled in. It is also costing $20 to park which I think is a little nuts. According to the FB group the whole parking situation is insane.

It should be good times (minus the parking). Unfortunately pictures will probably not be taken with me as this is not a iPhone friendly race :-)

Afterwards we are heading back home for dinner and then going to see ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ – my first movies that don’t involve babies since Max was born. It is going to be good!!

Breaking News!

Hey guys!

Big news!

After 7 months….

I can fit into my jeans again!

I am back to my ‘pre-Max’ weight as well. Which is probably why I can fit into my jeans. I still can’t fit into a few pairs of my dress pants though. It is not the weight that is the issue – it is the change in my bone structure. I do think that things are settling back into place. Or at least I hope so – I don’t want to have to buy a whole new set of dress pants like I had with my capris.

Today is one of the first days that I am wearing clothes that I wore pre-baby. I have just started to be able to wear some Pre-M shirts and stuff, but this is the first time for pants (other than yoga pants that don’t count).

I think I can really attribute this to the fact that because I am working (and without a car most days), I have pretty much stopped eating fast food. I have also lowered my coffee drinking as well since I don’t drink more than one mug a day. Other than today when I needed two.

With being able to fit into some of my old clothes I can finally wear some items in my wardrobe that I haven’t been able to wear in over a year AND I have more choices. I’ve essentially been wearing the same outfits every week. At least my laundry hasn’t been too bad :-)

Alrighty, back to work…..

Carrier Debate

While browsing my twitter followers the other day, I noticed a tweet that focused on babies being bored in strollers and how the person wanted to had each parent who she saw with a stroller a carrier.

Although I do get the sentiment behind the message (that maybe parents don’t know about the carriers out there), I did point out that not every baby likes carriers. Max is one of those baby. When ‘baby shopping’ and making registry lists, I asked for a Moby (wrap-style carrier). When Max grew out of that, I purchased a Beco Gemini Carrier. We were also gifted an MEC ‘Happy Trails’ backpack. Although the Moby was great for the first 2-3 months, he ended up hating it. He lasts about 15 minutes in the Beco before he starts screaming. He isn’t big enough for the Happy Trails one, but I’m hoping that he likes it so we can go hiking one of these days. But the main idea is – Max does not like to be carried, especially in public.

For those of you who have met Max, you know that unless he is hungry/tired, he is a very well-mannered baby. However, put him in a carrier and he will scream bloody murder. Two of his epic public meltdowns have been when he was being carried. I cannot for the life of my figure out why. I do think it is a combo of being ‘tied down’ and not being able to fully see everything (especially in the Moby). Also, after the first 3-4 weeks, Max was not able to fall asleep in any carrier. Once he became ‘self-aware’ (which was really early in his case), he pretty much wanted out.

I was able to wear him on a bus and around school a couple of times. If I wanted to sit down and do work or something – never! I think he just doesn’t like to be carried as simple as that

The comment irked me because the tweeter assumed that all babies are bored in a stroller. Max loves his chariot rides and it calms him down. He loves to look around and see the world. Other than the first initial ‘buckling in’, he doesn’t make a peep. Unless he is hungry….

All babies are different, we are told over and over again. So why is it that people think that babies should/shouldn’t do certain things? There is a difference between information sharing and judging someone. I would honestly be annoyed if someone handed me a carrier thinking that I don’t have 3.

Anyways that is just my thoughts on that. I love carriers and really wish that Max liked them a bit more. It would make things a little bit more easy and fun!

Weekend Re-Cap

I am taking a bit of a break from school work to get this post written. I am switching classes tomorrow from Careers to Civics, and since I’ve only taught Civics once before, it requires a ‘bit’ more prep-work. Mostly to review my powerpoint slides for giant spelling errors I made when designing the course last year…..

We had a busy weekend. On Friday after work we had dinner and then headed to Costco to get some supplies for the weekend. Of course I found other things to buy, including a club-pack of Clif Bars. Normally I get them for about $2 a piece at the store – Costco price 80 cents….SOLD!

On Saturday we had breakfast and then packed up the car to head to my family’s annual BBQ reunion in Belleville. Lots of great food and family. This year we had 3 babies! They sat and played for pretty much the entire day. Max and his cousin Alina had a nap upstairs during the afternoon and when they woke up they apparently just sat their giggling and babbling to each other. Super cute! Max enjoyed his peach in his mesh eater and some how a bit later Alina had grabbed it and was munching on it too. Apparently she had not had peach before (or anything but a bit of rice cereal). Opps! :-)

Max was great until about 8pm when he started to melt down (it was his bedtime). He didn’t really hit the hay until well after 9pm. I thought he would sleep in – NOPE. Also Mr. Poopy Pants once again decided no to go poop outside of his own house. He didn’t go until he got to his own house. 30 minutes of walking in the door – he went.

What a weird kid.

No running was done this weekend. Why? Because somehow I managed to lock/pop/screw up my knee on Friday. I was walking into the Library/Summer School office, took a step and bam, knee gives out. I didn’t fall or anything, but it hurt a bit. I ended up limping the rest of the day. It still hurts just a bit, but it should be better in a couple of days. I think I am going to just take it easy this week though.

This week in Running

This week is running has been pretty good. I went for a 9.5K long run on Sunday. Lots of people were out and about and the weather was near perfect. I slowed down my pace significantly and if it were not for wanting to be back in about an hour, I would have gone for 10K. My legs didn’t hurt and neither did my ankle.

On Tuesday I did a Tempo Run with Max in tow. Tempo runs with the Chariot = not really ‘fast’ tempo times, but I still picked it up a notch in order to get my heart rate up. The sucky thing? My Garmin died at 1.5K. I do know my KM markings very well on my typical running route, but I cannot estimate times very well. Unfortunately with a tempo run, timing is important. So I just guesstimated and went on my way. I did 4K with the first and last 500m as a warm up and cool down.

Monday we just went for a walk and ran into the ‘Coach to 5K’ Running Room Group. They were doing great! I saw them again when I went for a walk with Max on Wednesday night. I was supposed to do a Hills workout on Wednesday but P was out and taking the Chariot up a hill is a one way ticket to some ankle pain. So it was a no go.

Running is going well again. I am not really under any pain while running, which means the new shoes/inserts are working. I am also not focusing on getting faster, but building a longer base. There is no reason why I need to be ‘smokin fast’ for the half, so why risk an injury with 2 months to go?

In a related thought – I think I finally have enough tech-shirts to last me a whole week of running, yay!!

Have a great weekend!
