Good Wednesday to you!
With changing hosts and doing all this ‘website work’ stuff – I’ve decided to get a brand new layout for the blog. Normally I’ve used a customized WordPress 2011/2012 theme that is provided free of charge. These types of themes are pretty easy to figure out and usually you just have to press a few buttons to ‘customize’ your site. Now the downfall of these ‘free’ themes is you cannot do much with the themes. Couple of colour changes, changes in the background is all you can really do. That and so many people have the same theme. You can pay someone to design a whole blog theme for you – but those can be very pricey!
So while talking to my new website host guy, he told me about a great website that offers custom themes for a low price. The website is ThemeForest. There are more than just WordPress themes available as well! I choose the Avada theme which is pretty simplistic, but allows for much more customization.
When you download the theme – you do have to do a little website tinkering to get it to work. It isn’t that hard and the theme comes with detailed instructions on how to upload and install your theme. Afterwards you can tinker with the theme to make it your own. The big change that I did was had a homepage rather than just the blog posts page being the ‘main page’. Although the theme gave you the html code to make the home-page, I had to tinker with it a bit to make it applicable to my blog.
With all of these, it would be really easy to make a full website using WordPress. Meaning that you could do much more than just having a blog! I know that some people are uncomfortable tinkering around with their blog – but it really isn’t hard to do. As I might have mentioned before, I write this blog as a bit of a hobby and part of that is learning how to maintain a self-hosted blog. I still have quite a bit of work to do on the new site – but it will be fun work!
Alrighty – Have a good day 🙂
