Week 15: Take a Zumba Class

Greetings!

So yes – this isn’t a spin class. The spin class schedule at the two gyms in my area do not work with my schedule right now (I’m either at the track or busy with Max) – so I saw that the Zumba class time today fit – so off I went

I have updated the 52 Things List – check it out here

Week 15: Take a Zumba Class

When I joined Goodlife Fitness a few years ago, I started taking the Body Flow classes – I used to go to the classes quite frequently (usually once a week) until Max came along. Goodlife has many group exercise classes including Body Pump, Body Flow, Zumba, Spin classes and more. Newly added is a Jillian Michaels Shred class (might have to check that one out). I had not tried a Zumba class though. I know Zumba mostly because of Gina at Fitnessista.com – she is a Zumba instructor and every once in awhile she would write a post about her love of Zumba. So on the list it went.

I had to go to the bigger Orleans Goodlife location to take the class. This location was much bigger than my usual Goodlife – many more machines and a huge change-room. I waited around for the class – watching the Spin class finish up. When it was time for the class – only about 20 or so women entered, which was fine by me. The instructors always ask if someone is new to the class, and luckily I was not the only Zumba-newbie. Zumba is a latin-music inspired dance-fitness workout. According to the Goodlife chart – it is a moderate level class. The class is an hour long and is filled with beat-pumping music based on latin music (salsa, merengue, reggae and hip hop). The workouts switch with each song – ending with a cool down and stretch

The class was a lot of fun – and was definitely a workout. I didn’t really have any trouble following along. There were lots of ages of women there – young and old. Everyone had fun and clapped at the end of every song change. The instructor gave many modifications/challenges for those who wanted to go at it a bit easier – or those (like me) who needed a bit more of a workout. I really liked the music. I would say that an hour was a bit long for me – not because it was hard, but mostly because I got a bit bored in the end. I’m not 100% sure I would want to take a class every week – but it is a nice change from other cardio workouts. Next time – I have to wear different shoes. I wore my hardcore stability shoes and that was just too much for this kind of activity. I would be fine in a more neutral shoe I think. I really need to buy another pair of shoes……

So that is this weeks challenge!

Next week – should be giving blood this week, but I really have to check the schedule. I’m a little busy on Tuesday/Thursday/Friday/Saturday this week….

Have you tried Zumba?

Do you have a gym membership?

Do you go to any other classes?

I’ve gone to Zumba a few times and it’s a lot of fun. I don’t really feel like I got a huge workout in after, until the next day when random muscles are sore! I go to LA Fitness right now – and go to spin class at least 1-2x a week. I’ve tried almost all of their offerred classes, but most of them aren’t challenging enough.

I think LA Fitness is like Canada’s Goodlife 🙂 I see them everywhere when I am down in the States

I’ve never taken Zumba and doubt I ever will. I don’t think I am coordinated enough.

I don’t have a gym membership. I like workout classes but I have a hard time fitting them in.

I used to do Ripped workouts all the time. Now I do the DVDs at home.

We are members at a gym but we go so infrequently (we love to run outside) that I’m wondering if we should keep it. I did like doing yoga during the winter.
The only time I did Zumba was for 20 minutes after a yoga class before picking up Gabe from soccer. It was ok… I am so slow to learn moves and routines. It was loud. It wasn’t my favorite, but I was with fun people 🙂

I wish I could get monthly passes to my gym – I rarely go in the spring! But I do get a nice teacher’s discount….
