Hot Spring Runs

Happy Thursday!


Yesterday and today I completed two runs during Week 1 of Half Marathon Training. Yesterday I ran a steady run and this morning was a tempo run. Since my work schedule has changed a bit, I have a bit more flexibility with going out for runs when Max is at daycare. Well most runs, I do not have much time for long runs, but those are mostly scheduled on the weekend. Most of my runs are 3-4Km for the next few weeks, which can be done in 18-25 minutes so it is easy to get a run in.

Steady Run

I went out for a run right at the end of school. It was 3:30pm by the time I got out and the sun was blazing. I was not a happy camper. I left my Garmin at home, and instead used Nike+ app on my iPhone to gauge my distance and time. Today’s run was just 3K (1.86 miles). My steady pace is 6:34 km/10:35miles. I stuck to this pace fairly easily. My average pace at the end was measured at 6:33 – so I was right on the money. The sun sucked though, especially the run out as the sun was directly above me and right in my face. I completed my 3K steady run in 19:40.

Tempo Run

I am only at school for a half day today – so I was able to go for a tempo run this morning. I did a 3K tempo run with 60% of the run in “tempo mode” at 80% (5:55km/9:31 miles). Of course, I took off way too fast in tempo mode and was sitting at 5:35 which was comfortable, but at first I was at 5:00km pace (yikes). The weather was perfect. I finished the run at 18:35.

    I did 10k today and it was miserable. It was hot and I ended up throwing up a little on the side of the road! Oops! I think it was because I tried a new protein bar before my run… I did it before it got too hot but it didn’t work too well! It was already 75* F at 630 this morning.

    I can’t tell you how much I hate running in heat. Before I was a runner I thought people were crazy to be out in the cold weather of winter to run, but now I totally get it. I would much rather run in below zero temperatures than be out in the heat. My biggest worry about training for my fall races is the fact that I have to train through the summer.
    I’ll be at the Army Run too. My plan is to use it as a slow training run to prepare for the Toronto Marathon. I am just starting training again after taking a couple of weeks off. I am already slightly panicking at the thought of running 42.2k!!! What was I thinking when I signed up???

      Yup, last summer was hot and training was brutal. But for me, I have more time in the summer to actually do proper training, so I suffer with the heat for a bit

    I would MUCH rather run in the heat than the freezing cold! I love training for fall marathons for this very reason… definitely not saying it is easy by any means. Hot runs are brutal!

      hot, humid runs are brutal. So not looking forward to when the humidity monster arrives


    On a run:
    Heat in Flagstaff = yuck.
    Heat where I’m from in Michigan = Y! U! C! K!
    Today I ran 4 miles in the morning and I think that’s going to be the norm throughout July and August for marathon training.

      I always found the heat here in Ontario far worse than when I go to California in the summer. But mainly that is due to humidity. I remember some of my California friends complaining about the humidity one day and I laughed and said that Ontario is far worse for humidity 🙂

    The weather is pretty nice here in the Western Washington, though sometimes a bit muggy. It’s been in the mid-70’s with a nice breeze. Perfect running weather 🙂

    I prefer to run in cloudy weather on long runs.

    I will be running 3 miles when I get home from work today.
