Yesterday was really crazy killing lots of flies in our house. Why? Well here in Ottawa, we only have garbage pick up every other week – so on hot weeks garbage is rather smelly. The last garbage day (almost two weeks ago), I noticed the world’s most horrible smell coming out of the garbage can after the garbage people took the garbage away. It was revolting. P thought I was overreacting, but then he smelt it and agreed. He hosed it down immediately and that is when I noticed the maggots. According to social media, maggots in garbage is a common occurrence in the summer when your garbage sits and stews for a bit. However – our garbage has never smelled that bad before, so I am thinking that something crawled in the garbage and died (another common thing to happen). Totally gross!!
So – about 10 days later (yesterday) – large, slow moving flies appear in the bottom part of our house. No where else in the house smells (evidence of a rodent that died in the walls – we did have a mouse under the stairs once but that was ages ago). I think we killed over 20 flies. They seem to have disappeared now. I am pretty sure that they were in the garage – our garbage stays in the garage because of the large amount of wildlife in the area (Moose have even been spotted in my ‘hood). Garbage day is on Friday, so the bin will get a proper hose down then.
I was thinking this morning while making breakfast, that I don’t really like breakfast foods all that much. So, I came up with the idea to share 5 random facts about myself that may make me a bit different from the average bear.
5 Random Facts About Me!
1) Yes, it is true, I hate breakfast food.
I’ve never really liked breakfast. The whole idea of “breakfast for dinner” has never appealed to me. Yes – I do like Cora’s Restaurant breakfast options – but mainly for the fruit. I do not really like eggs (they tend to make me sick), maple syrup hurts my tummy (oh no’s) and don’t even get me started about breakfast sausage (and mostly all of the breakfast meats). I do like bacon, and the McMuffin (bacon version only) – but that is it.
2) I do not dye my hair – at all
The hair you see on top of my head is my real, un-touched hair. The last time I dyed my hair was in 2007. Prior to that, I dyed my hair every colour of the rainbow. But now – nothing. Every once and awhile I ponder putting highlites in or something, but then I look at the cost and say no.
3) I prefer apartments/condos to townhomes/houses
If I were on my own, I highly doubt that I would live in a house. I really dislike most parts of home ownership (yard work and gardening especially) and don’t really require much space – so living in a smaller sized condo would work for me. I always tell P that when he is old and cannot do home maintenance type things – we are moving into a condo.
4) I have been enrolled in some form of post-secondary institution since 2002
I had to write it down to see if it was true but indeedy-do, I’ve paid $$ at McMaster University, the University of Western Ontario, University of Toronto and Ottawa U for over ten years. I went to McMaster from 2002-2006, Western from 2006-2007, OISE/U of T online courses happened in 2008 and 2009, and I started my masters in 2010 and will not be completed until next Spring. Oh.my.goodness.
5) I have yet to visit anywhere in Canada but southern Ontario and southern Quebec.
I may have been to Australia, I may have been to California and Florida – but I have yet to travel to B.C. or Alberta or the Maritimes or anywhere! I think two summers from now we will take a big trip across Canada in an RV or something. Canada is one big country and it can be very expensive to travel in. A few years ago, I was amazed that it was significantly less money to fly to Los Angeles than British Columbia.
What is a fun fact about you?
