Job News

Hi All – Happy Wednesday

I received my job assignment for next semester and I will be going to a school across town for a part-time position.  I will be teaching two classes of Careers and Civics (a mandatory class in Ontario) which is what I teach at summer school – so I am very excited to teach a course that I’ve taught 10+ times. Teaching two classes is what I worked in Semester 1 of 2012/2013 and it is slightly more than working 50% (I am paid 66% of my full salary) – so I know that I will be fine money wise. There is the option of being “topped up” with supply work, but because of the distance I have to commute, I am not going to stress out about it.

Which comes to my next point – the commute. I am basically commuting to the same end of town that I was during the first part of the year this year, but a tad bit farther. But, because I am not full-time and the school day periods flip, I will only have to be at work for 9am every other day. It takes 30 minutes or so without traffic to get to the school, but probably more like an hour during rush hour. Basically I have to make it to downtown and traffic eases up. The bad news to that is now I really have to make sure I’m out of the house early 🙂  Remembering the days when I could take up at 8am and be at work in plenty of time…..

Lastly – something that I knew was coming and have been prepping mentally for – because of the commute I will not be coaching high school track and field this year. I will still be coaching with the competitive group  though, which means I still will be coaching students but in a different way. We take a break from our ‘competitive track meets’ and have a high school season from March until June. We still go to the meets but in a supportive/cheering on role. We are very explicit that in high school season they go to their high school coaches first for advice, high fives and that sort of thing. It is going to be interesting to be on the other side of things this year!

The other positive of my job this semester is that I will have more time for my own running. On the days that I am at school first thing, I will be finished by 2pm, which means I can take advantage of that time to run. There are lots of places to run in Barrhaven (where my school is located) and if I want to run at home – I have til 4pm to pick up Max. My running gear will be a regular item in my car.

Lots of positives but a few negatives. At least I have stable work til June! Yay!

In other news – I will be having a giveaway later this week and be possibly announcing a really neat race addition to my running calendar, so stay tuned!

That’s awesome news!! So happy for you! Must be a relief. The commute will suck but at least you will have lots of time to get your own running in.

Yes – relieved that I do not have to supply. Although I will be making a bit less, I will be making more than if I had to supply! I’m hoping for a less stressful semester 🙂

What exciting news! I’m glad you get to still do some coaching! Looking forward to the giveaway and race announcement. 🙂

Joining the competitive club for coaching was a good decision last year – works a bit better with my schedule 🙂

Congrats on the job! Too bad its not in Kanata – I have 4 days a week that I finish at 2:00 too and that’s when I do my weekday runs. One of these days we’ll get a run in together.
