This race season is all about the new and interesting races for me. Other than Army Run (which by the way – registration is open!), I am not registering for any races I’ve run before. Although some favorite races of mine were cancelled, most of my race season planning is gearing up for the Ottawa Run Weekend half and for NYC. The only run I *may* run is Emilie’s Run, but I think I have found a race to replace my favorite fast 5K: The B&O Yorkville 5K Run!
I did mention this race last year, but was unable to run the race because I heard about it a bit too late and it sold out. This unique 5K only has 1000 runners and is pegged as one of the fastest 5K’s in Canada. So fast, that this year, Athletics Canada (governing body of Track and Field, Road Races and Cross Country) has announced a 5 year partnership with the Yorkville Run to host the Canadian 5K Road Race Championship. 200 of the fastest 5K Elite runners will have a race before the Yorkville Run with $8000 in prize money available. In order to run in the Championship, runners must register with a recorded time in the 2013-2014 season with a time below 19:00 for men and below 21:00 for women. This is going to be a fast race!
Ok – so for the rest of us that are not that fast (yet), here is what is up for you:
The B&O Yorkville 5K run is an exclusive event that is only open to 1000 participants. The race occurs on September 7th in Toronto, starting at 9am with the Canadian 5K Championship. The registration cost is $100, which seems steep, but this race comes with a race kit that is beyond amazing. In your race kit you will find the following, valued at $365
– New Balance Technical Shirt
– A complete fuel system from Vega
– A premium tea package from David’s Tea
– Personalized bib and timing chip
– Voucher for free race photos
– Medal (last year’s was so nice!)
– A pair of B&O Play headphones that are valued at $130
Plus – at the end of the race you will nibble on hors d’oeuvres from Yorkville restaurants served by waiters wearing white gloves. Sounds better than stale bagels….
There are also prizes available for fundraising over $500. Prizes come from Tiffany and Co, Chanel, Bang and Olufsen, Louis Vuitton and other Yorkville boutiques. Since 2010, The B&O Yorkville Run has raised over $200,000 for YWCA Toronto in support of it’s Elm Centre and Women’s shelters. This year they will also be raising funds for Mount Sinai Hospital, Prostate Cancer Canada and Jesse Ketchum Public School.

So – I mentioned that this race is exclusive. There are only 1000 spots available and this year, the race organizers are allowing VIP to register a month early for the race. There is a good chance that this race will sell out before the general public are allowed to register. Out of the 1000 spots, only 500 are available for non-fundraising participants. The other 500 will be charity bibs, which you purchase for $100 and then must fundraise a certain amount of money.
Because I wrote this post – I was given a VIP code. I will be registering for the race on the 15th, when the VIP registration starts. If you want in on a really cool 5K, and want to run with me – I have
TEN FIVE (hurry, going fast) VIP Registration codes to giveaway. Since time is crucial, giveaway rules are easy – comment on the blog or tweet me and I will be able to hook you up. So if you are interested, let me know! You will still need to pay the registration fee (as will I!), but it is well worth it! Remember, certain races around here you pay almost $50 for a race and just get a t-shirt 🙂
Hope to see you there!
Note: I was not compensated to write this post, but was given a VIP code to use to register. All opinions are my own. As always, I like to share information about races I find interesting and want to run in. All photographs are used with permission from the B&O Yorkville Run organizers.
