A run on the canal

Happy Friday!

Did you watch Grey’s Anatomy last night?  Definitely a good episode that lived up to its hype – but don’t worry, I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t been able to watch it yet.

Last night I had night class downtown. I finished work at 3:30 and was downtown just after 4pm. Since class starts at 5:30, I had time for a run. The University of Ottawa is located right in the middle of downtown Ottawa, just a walk across a bridge to the Rideau Centre Mall, NAC and a short walk away from Parliament Hill. When I do go to class, I tend to walk around the area before class. Even one week last Fall, it was so nice out that I just sat on a park bench and soaked up some sunshine. The Rideau Canal is a very popular place for Ottawa runners. There are bike/walking paths along the canal and many people walk, run, bike or even skate (in the winter) to work. This area is also part of the Ottawa Run Weekend and Army Run race routes – all routes 5-10-half and Marathon end on the canal. But funny enough, out of all the running I’ve done in races on the canal, I’ve never had a training run on them!

I changed for my run at work so that I could just park and get on my run. I parked in an Ottawa U parking lot, grabbed my iPhone to measure distance and went out to the path. The rain had stopped earlier in the day, and it was fairly warm out too (warm meaning 15C). There were so many people on the path! Not hundreds, but it was nice to not be the only runner out. I ran towards the 417/Pretoria Bridge for 2.5K and then turned around the head back. The first 2.5K was loads of fun because of headwind. On the way back it was so much easier to run.

Some views of my run:

I finished 5K in 29:00 – just a nice steady run. I did get progressively faster through the 5K. The only bad thing about the run was that my stomach started acting up again, and by stomach you all know what I really mean. I’ve heard this happens quite a bit when mileage is amped up – but its getting rather annoying! It happened on Sunday too – but because I didn’t eat anything directly after, my stomach was aching for the rest of the day. This time I quickly downed the rest of my Vega drink and promptly ate a sandwich and chocolate milk in class. I believe that it is time to cut a few foods/drinks out of my diet until the half marathon. I also took a quite baby wipe shower in the washroom and changed my clothes before class, in case you were wondering if I went to class all sweaty.

I enjoyed my little run on the canal and the bright side of being downtown 2x a week -is that I will be able to get out and run the path quite a bit. Next week I finish work at 2pm on Tuesday, so it should be a great time to get a great run in!

Have a great weekend!
