One of my favorite breakfast foods (and one least likely to make my tummy upset is oatmeal. There are different flavour combinations, it is easy to make and filling. I usually do not eat breakfast first thing in the morning, but rather as I arrive at work. The great thing about oatmeal is you can prepare it fresh at work with nothing other than boiling water. I am kind of a Clif bar + banana person when it comes to pre-race foods, but oatmeal is VERY popular amongst runners for that pre-run breakfast.
I was given the opportunity to try My Oatmeal – custom oatmeal through Fit Approach/Sweat Pink. How it works is that you go to their website, and build your own blend of oatmeal. You have to choose from the following:
– How much you want (1-4lbs)
– Oatmeal Flavours
– Nuts and Seeds
– Sweetening options
– how often they should ship it.
I created two blends to try: Tropical Blend and Snicker Oatmeal
My recipes were:
– Instant Oats
– Key Lime Pie Flavouring
– 1oz Mango
– 1oz Strawberry
– Brown cane sugar
– Instant Oats
– Snickerdoodle Flavouring
– 1oz Blueberries
– 1oz Apple
– PB Lean Peanut Butter Powder
– Peanut Pieces
– Brown Cane Sugar
Once you create your blend, your order is shipped right to your door. Because I live in Canada, it took over a week to get to me, but that is standard for products being shipped from the United States. The only negative part of the My Oatmeal experience is that the shipping costs were the same as my oatmeal costs (about $22). As much as I enjoyed the product, I am not going to spend $45 on it. In the US, shipping is more affordable at around $6.
How were my blends? Pretty good! The Tropical blend was indeed, tropical. Once I opened the bag, you could smell the lime and mango. It tasted different than my standard peaches and cream variety. I really like the Snicker Oatmeal and strongly suggest you copy my recipe if you like peanuts. I thought having crunchy peanuts would be weird, but it worked. The blueberries were also a great add-in to the mix. It was peanut-y with a side of fruit! I would say that I would have to sweeten my oatmeal a *touch* more. But some of you may like slightly less sweet oatmeal blends.
There are other oatmeal options at My Oatmeal – including pre-mixed popular blends and something very interesting called PB Lean (dehydrated PB with significantly less fat – and lots of flavour options!). I kind of want to try that now…
If you are interested – check out their website and give them a follow on Twitter/Facebook.
Disclosure – I was given the oatmeal to try for free, but I did pay for my own shipping costs as the coupon I had for the oatmeal was the same as my shipping costs and I chose to make two blends rather than have a portion of shipping covered. As always, all opinions are my own.
