Less than 50 days to go before the NYC Marathon!
We are starting to hammer out our travel plans. NYC is actually not that far from Ottawa – about 6.5-7 hours. Considering that on average it takes me 5.5-6 hours to get to my parents house, 7 hours isn’t that bad. However – we are not staying in Manhattan the whole time. Marathon weekend is crazy expensive, and even with travel deals, it just isn’t affordable. What we are planning on doing is taking off from Ottawa on the Friday at noon hour – this gives us plenty of time to get to the New York Area before it is too crazy late. The plan is for both of us to work the morning and head out at lunch. My lunch hour starts at 11:15, so I can be at P’s school by noon, and off we go to Newark, NJ. I would like to take only one break and just get to Newark.
We are staying at a Newark airport hotel on Friday and Sunday nights. We are staying at the same hotel both nights, and I’m hoping that the hotel will let us keep the car in the hotel parking lot for Saturday too. I’m thinking it won’t be too big of a problem – but I’m going to call and find out. I’m trying to avoid driving in Manhattan and paying $50 for parking. Plus – Max is going to freak on what will happen Saturday morning – train ride!
On Saturday we are going to eat breakfast at the hotel and quickly make our way to the train station via the AirTrain. Another call I have to make is what kind of “shuttle” the hotel has. We want to avoid using the car seat – so bus = ok, a van, no go. I’ve got some back up plans in case the shuttle is a van. Trains to Penn Station run quite frequently and are very affordable, so Mr. Max is going to go on a train ride! The shuttle will drop us off at the Air Train and then we make our way to the train station. We are planning on packing very light for the Saturday trip – just PJ’s and a change of clothes for Sunday. I will have a ‘marathon bag’ filled with throwaway layers and that sort of thing – but most of that will go into donation piles on Sunday. The train station is fairly close to the race expo – so that will be our first stop. After that, I’m not sure of our plans, other than stopping by the 9/11 Memorial. I’m also trying to figure out what to eat on Saturday for lunch and dinner – so if you have suggestions, let me know!
On marathon day, I’m gone almost all day – so P and Max will have some Manhattan adventures. I have a few spots planned out for them – including many indoor locations. P has never been to NYC, so he really has no idea on where he is going. The last stop I have planned for them is really close to the finish line. We will both have phones on us, so when I’m finally done, we can get out of there. Dinner will happen in Manhattan and will probably consist of something delicious with an adult beverage. Then – it is back to the train station and back to Newark.
We are taking Monday off, so the drive back to Ottawa will be a bit leisurely. I am planning on stopping in Syracuse where we happen to drive by a Cheesecake Factory. Trader Joe’s is opening in October – so yes, I will be going there again as well.
Race Day will be here before I know it, I’m sure!
