In what seems like another practice run before traveling to NYC – we took a little road trip to Rochester, NY this past weekend. It wasn’t all for fun as we had a robotics tournament to go to. But – I still was able to do all my “American Things” and spend some $. We left Kanata fairly late in the afternoon on Friday at around 4:30pm. I am very glad that we are traveling the bulk of the Ottawa-New Jersey trip in the daytime as driving at night just isn’t my cup of tea. We should be leaving Ottawa at noon, leaving a good 6 hours of daylight travel time – which is most of the trip. Anyways, we strolled into Rochester just before 10:30pm. We settling into the hotel, with Max taking a whole queen-sized bed to himself.
The next morning, P left early for robots and Max and I had a hotel adventure. We had a crappy hotel breakfast and watched Full House and Spongebob. P picked us up just before noon and we went to the robotics tournament for a bit. Of course, it being lunch time, Max and I quickly left for the Cheesecake Factory. Luckily, I am familiar with Rochester, so I quickly got us to the restaurant with no issues. Max had chicken fingers and fruit, while I had fish tacos! I ordered a pumpkin cheesecake to go.
The location of the Cheesecake Factory was also right beside Trader Joes – so you know I went in there. This time, no perishables as I knew it would be more than 6 hours before we would make it home. I did purchase most of my wish list, except pumpkin coffee as it was out.
After TJ’s we stopped at the bookstore to pick up some books for Max (books are cheaper in the US) and he picked out one toy, a Rocket made out of recycled materials. After that, we drove to a mall so I could grab a pair of Mizunos for $80 – the first store I went to had the pair I was looking for in my size. After that we hung out at the robotics tournament til it ended. Max was a trooper as he didn’t nap until almost 6pm. This is good because on marathon day, he will have to repeat that. I’m hoping that P and Max stay in the hotel for most of the morning and relax (I am also worried that they will get lost).
The drive home was pretty long and boring. P drove in the US and I drove in Canada. We had to unload the rental van before going home and of course we hit construction traffic at 11:30pm on a Saturday night. We finally strolled in at midnight – Max stayed up almost to the end. Poor guy was so tired that he could barely keep his eyes open as we got him ready for bed. Overall we had a fun little road trip. As mentioned above, I am glad the NYC ride will be mostly during daylight!
