Upcoming Ottawa Races

It is prime time to start registering for Spring road races. I’ve written a few posts in the past about races that I think you should consider. Some races sell out – so act fast!

1. Ottawa Race Weekend

This is the “big one” in Ottawa. The largest event of the year and what I believe the #1 Ottawa running event that gets people hooked on running. The half marathon is already sold out with the 10K next to sell out (sitting at 77%). The costs of the race are not too bad and all your standard race distances are offered. If you do want to run the half – look out for a bib market later on. I will be running the 10K this year and it shall be crowded.

Fun Fact – the race has about 47,000 people running over the course of the weekend. During the 2014 NYC Marathon, over 50,000 people ran just the one race, yikes!

Dates: May 23-24, 2015

2. Manotick Miler

A fun race in the south end of Ottawa. The race organizers are a bunch of super, fun, enthusiastic individuals who put on a great race. I paced the 5 miler last year and hope that they will have me back! It is a smaller race with 1 mile, 3 mile, 5 mile and 10 mile races. Definitely a different spin on distances for us Canadians! The race has a big community feel to it, with the local businesses allowing the runners to park in their parking lots (THANK YOU!). There is also a tailgate party after with a BBQ and beer from Big Rig.

3. MEC Road Races

MEC Ottawa has a number of races in the Ottawa area in 2015. The Cold one is the first race up this year at the Rideau-Carleton Raceway. The MEC races are really cheap (about $15), have chip timing and are fun! The races are super small, but with a very enthusiastic crowd. MEC is also offering trail races too. I’m hoping to run the June race in Carp again – it has a killer hill. There are no medals or t-shirts at this race, but door prizes will be won. There are medals for the top 3 male/female finishers!

Date: January 29, 31, May 2, June 21, July 4, July 19, September 12

4. Run for Reach

I have not run this race yet – but it seems like it would be another fun edition to the busy April race schedule. Run for Reach will be celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. There is limited information on this run right now, but if my memory serves me, the race was downtown.

Date: April 12, 2015

5. Sporting Life 10K

A new race for Ottawa! I’ve mentioned the race a few times, but because it is such a good deal ($45 if you register by next Thursday), I will mention it one more time. The race will be on the Rideau Canal Path (flat!) – but not starting downtown. The race will start at Bank Street, move up towards highway 417, and then spin around toward’s Dow’s Lake heading towards Carleton University. If you have run any Ottawa race on the path – you have run the route before. The race is limited to 5000 participants, which makes it large, but still small, compared to TORW which sits at 12,000 runners. Extra bonus – the medal is a teddy bear medal!

Date: May 10th, 2015

Happy Running!

I’ve done the Run4Reach 1/2 a couple of times. It starts at city hall and goes to Dow’s Lake and back (for the 10k and 1/2). The weather is usually warm enough to go light on the gear but still cool enough to race well. Excellent race. I might run it this year.

Thought about signing up for Sporting Life but it’s on Mother’s Day.

So far I’m only signed up for Ottawa 1/2.

Oh, how I miss running! I’m 39 weeks pregnant and stopped running early in my pregnancy. I’m looking forward to starting back up this Spring!
