#GetOutandGo

One of the aspects of teaching that I really appreciate is not being tied down to a desk all day. Whenever I spend more than a few hours in front of a computer, I feel tired and cranky.Teaching allows me to get up and move around whenever I feel like it. But, there are still moments when I sit down for long periods of time, like when we are in the computer lab or during a long marking session. Sometimes it is easy to spend the entire day sitting and barely moving.

February is Heart Month and Staples Canada is spreading the word about how important it is be active, especially to prevent Heart disease and stroke. #GetOutandGo is a movement towards getting out there and pushing yourself a bit, getting your heart rate up and living a healthy life. For me, the month of February is all about keeping up my momentum of exercising regularly so that the Spring won’t be a shock to my cardio system!

Staples generously provided me with a few goodies, including a Jawbone UP24. At first I wasn’t really sold on the idea of a “step counter” but it has been pretty interesting seeing my movement and sleep patterns over the past couple of weeks. I will discuss all the features of the UP24 in a later post, but it is a neat little tool. I thought that getting to 10,000 steps per day would be easy. Most of the time I do go beyond 10,000 steps, but some days (like this weekend when I was sick), I don’t go past 10,000. Seeing the UP24 statistics is making me more aware of how much I actually do sit around on some days. I love the sleep analysis data too. I remember one day getting one night of pure, interrupted sleep and noting how much better I felt in the morning. The UP24 is pretty accurate in terms of sleep as one night, Max was up 4x and you could see all the times I was ‘awake’ on the daily sleep report on my iPhone app.

While wearing the Jawbone UP24, many people have asked how it works, or showed me their own tracking devices. I have had several conversations with friends and co-workers about the importance of #GetOutandGo -ing and trying to stay active, especially in the cruel, Ottawa Winter.

    Pedometers are so trendy nowadays! I think it can be interesting to see how much your activity varies from day to day, though I’m sure some people get super obsessive over counting their steps, haha.
