Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts *Giveaway*

One of my goals for 2015 was to ensure that I eat breakfast every single morning – and a healthy one at that. In the past, I would be super rushed to get to school and eat not the greatest foods for breakfast. Think donuts, processed granola bars and sometimes even McDonalds. I’ve been doing better with breakfasts lately. Sometimes having eggs and a veggie hash, yoghurt with granola, breakfast sandwiches and my favorite lately, steel cut oats.

I am a busy person who can’t just grab a snack when I feel like it during the work day. No one really likes being taught by a teacher who is shoving a sandwich in her face while instructing students on how to use Photoshop. In some classes, food/drinks are banned (like my lab) – so, no eating allowed. I’ve been looking at different ways to have bigger breakfasts that pack a different punch. Luckily, I was given the opportunity as a SweatPink ambassador to try Manitoba Harvest’s Hemp Hearts. These tiny little seeds add some natural punch to a variety of meals. The hemp hearts have 10 grams of plant-based protein (which I always need) and 10 grams of omegas in a 30 gram serving. It is really simple to add to your favorite dish – just sprinkle it on. The hemp hearts have a slightly nutty taste to them, which can enhance your salads or yoghurt.

What I’ve really been enjoying adding some hemp hearts on is steel cut oats. I like my oatmeal with lots of different flavours and textures. Nothing plain for me!  I make a big batch of oatmeal weekly and spoon a serving into a container to take to work with me. I have topped my oatmeal with brown sugar, strawberries, blueberries, maple syrup and even my beloved cookie butter. I then sprinkle on some hemp hearts and voila, a great breakfast! Much better than a sprinkled donut!

A yummy oatmeal that is a perfect start to any busy day
Ingredients
  • 1 serving of steel cut oats (prepared as per instructions)
  • 3-4 strawberries - cut in half
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of Hazelnut/Almond Spread (Trader Joe's Almond Cocoa Spread used here)
  • 1 heaping tablespoon of Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts
Instructions
  1. Make or re-heat your steel cut oats
  2. Sprinkle the brown sugar on oats and top with the strawberries
  3. Add one small scoop of cocoa spread
  4. Sprinkle on hemp hearts
