Goodbye February!

Well – it is official: This February in Ottawa was one of the coldest in Ottawa Weather history! We did not get any huge snow storms or anything, but just endured day after day of lows in the -20C or even -30C and not seeing the temperature rise above -5C. I have forgotten what warm feels like.

winter running

Although some days were not too terrible, this was a cold winter! We are supposed to be in Spring by the 22nd, but it seems like the temperatures will never warm up. I am VERY curious at what the temperature will be for Around the Bay on the 28th! I do remember last year that it was a bit chilly and I over-dressed. I’m hoping for somewhere between 10C-15C for race day, but know that I will be in capris or even shorts if the temp is above 5C.

Looking at my mileage for February, I once again surpassed the previous month’s mileage and beat March of 2014’s mileage. I haven’t been piling on the KM’s as much as I would have liked (still no long runs), but I have been running at least 3x a week. I am very curious about what will happen when I run the ATB 5K. Last year I ran 27:xx without much training. I’m hoping to break 25:xx again.

One thing that definitely saved my training this winter was being able to go to GoodLife Fitness regularly. Although I did not use the treadmill every single time, it did help on those days when the temperature did not break -20C. The bigger thing was that I could get some decent runs in without slipping on ice/snow. The problem with running in my neighbourhood is that the sidewalks and even some roads are completely covered in a thick layer of ice. I have a 3K route that I can take from the school, but at the turn around point, even the road is covered in ice. I slow down significantly during this part, and even slipped at one point. Not ideal!

(I wish my path looked like this!)

As we move into March, the temperatures are starting to creep towards 0C again and the sidewalks are becoming a bit more clear. I noticed that one side of Orleans Blvd (which is my hilly route) had a great section of clear sidewalk. I went on a run with a few students yesterday at lunch at the route was 75% clear of snow! But, of course it is supposed to snow tonight. Even the temperature was nice yesterday, as we realized quite quickly that we were feeling this unusual sensation of being warm.  As I start to move back to running outside, the plan is to continue going to GoodLife for strength training at least 2x a week. This is exactly what happened yesterday as after school I got a short strength session in before picking up Max.  I am noticing a big difference in my running by doing all this strength training. For example, speed work on the track is going really well and I don’t hurt afterwards. I even ran 2K at race pace (5:00/km) the other day and it didn’t feel super exhausting. Progress!

Happy Running!

Man oh man, if there’s one thing I’m grateful for, it’s that I’m soon going to be living somewhere with mild winters. I don’t know if I could handle all that cold!
