Five Years of Running Races

The 2015 Ottawa Race Weekend has come to a close. Three days of fun: expo, two races and a day of volunteering on the marathon course. I cannot think of a better way to celebrate FIVE years of running races than what I did this weekend.

That’s right – Five years ago, I ran my very first 5K in the Ottawa Race Weekend

I signed up because everyone else at work was signing up for it. I have no pictures of the day (it was before I had a Smart Phone), don’t even remember what I wore, but I know that I had fun. Some friends were in town for a wedding and I had lunch with them. I stuck around downtown and just made my way to the start later on. My goal was to finish in under 40 minutes, but I finished in 33:12. I took a few running breaks and had my first visit with “The Hose Man”.

Five years later: I have run over 20 5K races, 3 10K’s, 3 half marathons, and 1 marathon. My twitter and instagram handles are related to running, and this blog is pretty much 90% running-related. I’ve made tons of friends by signing up for different races and by being a regular during Sunday’s #RunChat Twitter chats. I’ve paced a few races, been a water station leader for the Ottawa Marathon twice and even worn a tutu to encourage little kids to run a KM.

If you asked me six years ago that I would be doing all of this – I would have called you crazy. Now I’m the one who is encouraging people to run marathons 🙂

Happy Five Years of Running!
