I run some of the same races year after year. I do like knowing what to expect and strategize my races because I am knowledgeable of the course. But sometimes, I like to do something different: a new race distance, new location or a completely new type of race all together. The Reebok Spartan Races are obstacle races that happen all over the globe. This year there are several races located in major cities across Canada. The Spartan races have a variety of races with different distances and levels, so everyone from a beginner Spartan to someone with a bit more experience can find a race to run in. Obstacle races can be tons of fun. They usually over hilly terrain and are awfully muddy. If you don’t finish the race in a nice coat of mud, you should go back and start over 😉
Ottawa runners have the opportunity to register for many different events on different days. This year, Ottawa will have the Sprint (July 4-5), Super (August 8), Beast and Ultra Beast(August 9) Spartan Races.
Toronto – there are dates for you too!
Obstacles vary from course to course, but be prepared to be climbing, crawling and getting really muddy. The race distances range from 5K to over 20K in the Ultra Beast with 25+ obstacles! I find that running up and down the ski hills (where many of the races are held) = an extra challenge on top of the obstacles. When you sign up for a Spartan Race, you are not just signing up to run another race. You will be challenged, you will have fun and you most definitely will get a little dirty.
