Last year I felt like I was missing a big party: The Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. STWM happens right before NYC Marathon, which meant I was in taper-mode and couldn’t participate. This year, I will not be missing out and already looking forward to the 4+ hours of running. If you have not tried out a run at STWM before, you should really try the race!
A couple of things about STWM if you are considering entering the race:
1) There are three races: The 5K, half marathon and full marathon
You can have your pick! The half marathon route is the same route that the full marathon takes for the first 21.1K. The route is pretty amazing. You will get to see tons of Toronto and run on the waterfront. Those considering the half, we will get to see even more of Toronto as our second half of the race basically takes us to the Toronto Beaches and back.
2) The route is flat, super flat.
Don’t let the elevation chart listed on the STWM website fool you – that “hill” at the beginning is not a hill. I’ve walked up that hill and also ran up it. Not a hill, just a gentle rise in elevation. For comparison: STWM’s first hill is about a 25m rise over approximately 3K. NYC Marathon’s famous “big bridge start” is 50m uphill in only one mile (1.6KM). If anything that first hill will keep you from running out too fast. The rest of the route has only little hills here and there. This is PB/BQ city!
3) Hotel Prices
If you are travelling from out of town, or want to avoid traffic if you are coming from the suburbs (like me) – take advantage of the hotel deals listed on the STWM website. There are some great prices on hotels in the area, way better than prices listed on other online sites. The deals also include late checkout at some hotels. Make a weekend out of it and enjoy Toronto. I should probably make my reservation at Pizzeria Libretto now….
4) Tune up Runs
Are you wanting to run some of your long runs with a bunch of people training for the same event, but cannot commit to a clinic? Well, STWM also has tune-up runs scheduled throughout the training season for just that reason. There are tune-up runs each month with several Digital Champions and other fun folks attending as well. I will be attending Tune up Run #2 on July 12th! Hope to see you there!
5) Krista Duchene
Krista announced yesterday that she is running STWM! Enough said! Look out for more elite runner announcements over the summer.
I cannot wait for STWM. I know that the marathon will hurt something awful, but I’m really enjoying being “part of the party” this year. You may feel like you cannot run a marathon, but let me tell you that you can. You don’t need to run crazy fast or run 60+KM a week (but if you can, great!). Never underestimate what you can do.
If you are interested in running either the half or full marathon at STWM – I have a discount code for you. The code for 10% off is STWM10 and it expires tonight.
