Another Thinking Out Loud Thursday – linking up with Amanda and Running with Spoons.
#1 Why I like TOLT
This week has been pretty quiet for blogging – not much going on and I don’t really like to write boring, mindless posts. BUT – I almost never miss a Thinking Out Loud Thursday. I feel as if I can just mix together all my random thoughts/happenings of the week into one post. Sometimes I start a TOLT post as a draft if something comes up during the week, because odds are I will forget. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, hopefully the going back to school routine will make blogging a bit easier in the next few weeks.
#2 World Track and Field Champs!
Have you been watching? I hope so! I’ve been watching the events both morning and night since Day 1. We still have a couple of days to go with events including Decathlon, Hurdle Finals, 800m Women Final, and the relays. I just finished watching Usain Bolt win the 200m Final. He won both the 100m and the 200m, despite Justin Gatlin having a much better 2015 season. Of course, it looked like he jogged the last 10m of the 200m. I also watched Melissa Bishop (who is a member of my track club) SMASH the Canadian 800m record with a blazing hot time of 1:57 to be the #1 seeded athlete for the final. Amazing! Lanni and Tasha ran on Monday. Lanni had a better time than Pan Ams, but still a bit off from her PB. However, looking at the results, only the top 10 runners went below the 10,000m standard of 32:00. Not sure what was going on, maybe the heat? The 10,000m race brings me to talking point #3 for this week.
#3 THROUGH THE LINE
If you watched the Women 10,000m final – you would have seen what happened at the end of the race. The leading group was rather large right up until the last lap. Molly Huddle, of the US (and a fantastic runner) started her kick, along with some of the other faster runners. The 1st and 2nd place runners were long gone at the 80m line, but Molly kept going for the Bronze. Even though she did turn around and look, apparently she did not see USA teammate Emily Infeld right beside her. With her last two steps, Molly put her hands up in victory having no idea that Emily was still kicking hard. Emily passed her on that last step and won the bronze medal. The image of the finish is all over the internets and many discussions have been had. Some ask whether Emily “stole” the medal from Molly – especially considering they are from Team USA. In my opinion, absolutely not. Emily out kicked Molly at the last possible (hundredth) of a second. Molly made a crucial error of not running through the line, something us track coaches constantly have to remind our track athletes to do. You never know who is beside or behind you. You never know if you could be a “little q” and quality for another race. You never know if that last second is what separates your Boston Qualifying time from the registration cut-off. Through the line.
#4 New planner!
I bought my 2015/2016 school planner the other day. As much as I love the Plum Paper/Erin Condren planners – I am not paying $50 for a planner (Canadians get the really high shipping fees). Just not in the budget this year. So, I went to the bookstore and took a looksies at what they had. I almost went with the Moleskin planner I used to get, but saw a larger, colourful planner on the shelf. It has monthly pages, as well as weekly pages with more than enough room to put my school and personal stuff on. It also has a pocket and stickers. Good enough for me. I even had some Plum Rewards points to take $5 off. Sweet! Now hopefully, my planner gets filled in the next few weeks with schools starting. Right now all it has it running dates 😉
I K-taped my ankle/lower leg the other day, and it has made a BIG difference in how my leg/tendon has been feeling. I have a million years to wait before my ultrasound to figure out what is really going on. But, in the meantime, the K-tape seems to be taking a little bit of pressure off my post-tib tendon which is what I believe the issue is. I’m also doing lots of physio exercises and continuing with just cycling. However, K-tape does look a little silly with dressier outfits! The K tape also covers up my tattoo 🙁
#6 New kicks!
We had to buy Max some new running shoes on the weekend because he wore out his Nikes. We went to the local kids shoe store and tried on a few pairs. We ended up going with a pair of Asics, but also buying a cheaper pair for the playground. Max definitely likes the Asics more, and they seem to be more comfortable. The other pair from Payless is clunky, but Max just destroys his shoes when he plays. Max has already taken his new shoes out for a spin. He even asked to “go for a run”. Too cute!
That is all I have time for today – Have a wonderful Thursday!
