Summer is almost here and with that starts the summer running season. It seems like just yesterday that I was bundling up for my long runs with a hat, multiple layers and a pair of gloves on. The lead up to the Ottawa Half Marathon reminded me that summer running can be hard, especially in Ontario where we tend to get a decent amount of humidity. Summer running clothes is all about staying cool and comfortable. For me, I tend to wear loose, comfortable clothing that is able to wick away moisture.
Brooks kindly sent me a few items from the spring collection to test and review. Two items that I have been wearing frequently are the Chaser 3″ shorts and the Distance tank. I actually wore the Chaser shorts during the Ottawa Half Marathon in full effort to wear as little clothing as possible.
The Chaser shorts feature the wide waistband that I really like and are also semi-fitted. I worn the shorts during a half marathon and although they are a shorter inseam, I didn’t experience any chafing. The shorts also feature a sweat resistant pocket in the waistband that apparently fits a phone, but in my case, I fit two gels in the pocket. I barely felt the gels while running! The fabric is very light weight and it does feel like you are barely wearing anything. Other features include a mesh brief liner and side petal hems on the side. Definitely try the shorts on – they are shorter than most shorts and if you are self-concious about your behind, these shorts might not be for you.
The Distance tank is the tank-top version of the Distance long sleeve that I have. I really like the Distance long sleeve (it is my go-to long sleeve) and I decided to give the tank top a try. The Distance tank is semi-fitted, just like the long sleeve version. I have a bit of a tummy, so I appreciate nice looking tanks that are not super tight. I ordered a small, but should have ordered an extra small. Although it fits great at the waist/hips, it is a little loose at the arms. I have since purchased a Ghost tank in an XS and it fits perfectly.
The fabric is DriLayer Burst which wicks moisture and resists odour. I’ve worn the tank a number of times and it is decent for warm weather runs. I find that it does show sweat though – which isn’t a terrible thing. We all get sweaty while running! I do prefer the Ghost tank for hot weather runs though, however the Ghost tank is a little see through, so if I’m running around with students, the distance tank wins.
The Chaser shorts and Distance tank are now in my summer running clothes rotation. As with most running companies, the items are not super cheap ($38 for the tank, $48 for the shorts), but they do last. I’ve worn my other Brooks shorts each week since I got them and they are still like new. So now that summer is here, it is time to break out the shorts and tanks, grab a water and get ready to sweat and Run Happy!
Disclosure: I was given the shorts and tanks in exchange for a review. I was not compensated for this review and all opinions are my own.
