Grad School

I am currently in a class from hell. I am enrolled in an online course for my M.Ed. program, and it is just awful. The course is technology and learning. There is mass confusion, not much in terms of content and nobody has a clue on what the professor wants in terms of assignments. For example, we thought for the first assignment, he wanted something like a personal response type paper (“Using your personal experience”)- but really he wanted a research-style paper with nothing really about yourselves. We all received cruddy grades, with most of us receiving the worst mark we have been given in the M.Ed. program so far. For the past few nights I have been on conference call after conference call with my group to figure out what the professor wants for our 40% group assignment. Basically I think he wants us to design a course – which has been thinking, is this a technology and learning course or flipping teacher’s college? To further complicate things – not everyone in the program is a teacher. We have nurses, doctors, government workers, lots of different careers. So although this stuff seems simple to me, for others they do no know where to start.

BLAH!

Where is my emergency tiara?!?!?!

I did have a bit of fun answering some easy questions on our “brainstorming” sheet

I am SO funny.

Friday Fun

Happy Friday and Happy March Break to all those now on vacation and/or have their kids home for a week! Yay Hooray! However, if you are going somewhere warm and sunny, I shall not be wanting to talk to you (just kidding…)

Today’s theme for spirit week was “CW Spirit” for the students, but Hawaiian for the teachers. Hawaiian day is an annual tradition and like many spirit days – is taken very seriously. I had on my Hawaiian shirt and a lei. I left some extras on the desk for others to have if they forgot to bring something fun to wear. Sorry, no pictures today. I wasn’t too terribly exciting.

I did manage to take a picture of the snack I had after lunch – SPRINKLE DONUT

Speaking of cameras – some of the kiddies decided to grab my camera and take selflies. Funny, they do not grab my iPhone ever, yet they were all over the camera. They did take some nice selfies, but I shall not post them here – this time…..

In other news – the Robotics Team is away at their East Toronto FIRST Robotics tournament. They are doing well – but the big news is that they won their first award ever tonight. They won the TEAM SPIRIT AWARD. Well Done!!

I *may* have had the webcast of the tournament running on my computer most of the day. Max and I watched the last couple of matches at home and we tried to “find Daddy” on the TV, hehe. Here is some lovely screenshots:

My Outfit

IMG_4304

Awesome-sauce don’t you think?

Ok – so details on the outfit:

The Sweater – Don’t you just love the sweater? I may have squeeled with delight when I found this gem at the Value Village. It just screams bad fashion with the colours, croceted flowers, tassles and a little mirror on the elephant. Most people thought that the sweater was the best part of the outfit.

The Pants – I don’t know what material the pants are? Velvet? Another great Value Village find. According to the tag they are “fitness pants” – not sure what kind of fitness I would be doing in these bad boys!

IMG_4305

The Socks and crocs – Crocs belong to P, the socks belong to me.

IMG_4299

They are not just colourful socks – they are SpongeBob Socks!!! Ohhhh yea!

IMG_4300

The Fanny Pack – Courtesy of P again – every child of the 80′s needs a fanny pack!

The “Bling” – the yellow necklace is from Value Village, the rest are mine. Too many necklaces = fashion faux pas!

IMG_4303

Bad Hair and Make-up: I have my hair up with a pony tail in the back, held together by a white bow (which you cannot see). Classy! To extend that class a bit farther, I put on blue eyeshadow right up to my eyebrows and wore pink lipsticks!

Look, I made some friends!!!

What do you think???

Tomorrow is Spirit day with the juniors and seniors wearing blue and orange – Staff will be wearing tropical wear!

Spirit Week Fun

Hi everyone!

Finally sitting in front of the computer after an afternoon of no computer!  I had a meeting across town today which required a bit of driving (took about an hour to get home – blah) and of course a 3-hr meeting :-) Good times!!  I did stop by the McD’s on the way to the meeting to pick up a Happy Meal. Yup – I sure did order a Happy Meal like a champ! I even got milk! Since when did they include a yoghurt in the box?  Bad news about traveling to a meeting is that I did not get to the gym today. Doesn’t matter too much though as I am bound to get my butt whooped at floor hockey tomorrow.

IMG_4294

Also – a small note on how much gear I take to work with me.  I think anyone that trains after work probably has the same amount of stuff. I also never utilize the trunk (it is dirty) nor the backseat (just lazy)

IMG_4292

So as mentioned before – it is spirit week at my school. Today was “Holiday Day” and yesterday was “Twin Day”. For Twin Day, myself and two friends wore a polka dot sweater and jeans combo. We realized a couple of weeks ago that my co-worker and I both had very similar sweaters. So twin day was easy! After work yesterday I went to Value Village to pick up some supplies for Holiday Day and tomorrow’s much anticipated “Fashion Faux Pas Day” – Let me tell you – my outfit for tomorrow is ridiculous on SO many levels!  I think I may have outdone myself!  I will of course take a picture and let you all see my bad fashion sense tomorrow!

For the rest of the night, it is all about relaxin’. Mr. D is on in under an hour and I have some reading material that arrived today! Well – I picked up the Food and Drink magazine at the LCBO (the place where one has to buy alcohol here in Ontario-land). I also have a huge mess to clean up thanks to Mr. Max!

"I'm innocent!!"

“I’m innocent!!”

Hope you all have a great evening!

When was the last time you ordered a Happy Meal?

What magazine subscriptions do you receive?

Do you have fun dress up days at your place of work?

CW Basketball Alumni Game

Sorry for the lack of post yesterday – I was fairly busy as we were short-staffed in our room (everyone has been getting sick again) and after work there was a basketball game, dinner and a haircut to attend to!

Speaking of the basketball game – it was the current CW team vs. the alumni. It was nice to see all the alumni back, even though they stop by quite often! This was the first year that the alumni game happened, but it will hopefully be a regular thing. I did have to leave the game a bit early (dinner was calling), I believe the alumni beat the current team. Well done!

Max came with me to the game and he spent most of the time looking at the players wondering why they had his ball and chasing the school mascot (no joke). He walked around and said hi to people and went up and down the hallway numerous times. Max also said hi to all of his friends (many of my students know him).

Before the game, a few of the alumni brought a tea for my co-worker/their Volleyball coach. But, he was sick at home so they gave his tea to me. Yay! I do have to say that I definitely prefer no sugar in my coffee ;-) I did let my friend know that I drank his tea, and he was ok with that ;-)

I recently signed up with Netflix since many of you use the service and have said nice things about it. I browsed through the selection and there are many movies and shows that I would want to watch. I saw that “How I Met your Mother” was on and put that on the “must watch list” as I haven’t seen a single episode.

Question for all you Netflix people: How much does it affect your download usage  Especially if you are with Rogers? I have high speed lite and get about 25G each month. I have no plans on upping that. Thoughts? I am going to monitor my use though!

Busy Busy Busy

Good evening!

Yes – it is the evening! Today was a busy, rushed, “go a mile a minute” type day. Dropped Max off at daycare, and zoomed to the school. I then taught my first period class. After that was prep time where I had to do too many things. Then another class and boom! Work day was done!  My plan was to go to the gym and get a treadmill run in, but I had to do some errands instead. Boourns! I am going to try and run tomorrow. After errands, it was time to pick up Max – then zoomed back home, made dinner, played a little and tada! Bedtime routine time. About an hour later I am at my desk getting to start the “second shift” of work time. I have some lovely final projects to mark tonight.

school work

My days usually go back fairly quickly. Because computer time is scarce – when I am on the computer I am doing things a mile a minute. Another further complication is the fact that my grad school course has started up again. This time it is an interesting course and NOT program evaluation (yay!). I’m hoping that it will be a more stimulating course. I am not happy that there are lots of group projects though. Because I am a “virtual student” for Fall/Winter semesters this year, I do not go to a classroom and I do not know the people in my class. This makes group work really annoying! But in my grad program, group work happens in every class, so I’m a bit used to it.

So while I was looking at the course online classroom, I saw that the prof has assigned us a small paper that is due on Saturday. We were just allowed into the online course on Monday – yeah, thanks for that one. Guess I am going to spend tomorrow night writing that one. Luckily it is small!

Well – time to get going on stuff – Have a great evening!

How was your day?

Do you have to do work at home too?

Snow Day!

Hmmm

The classrooms are empty

No one is sitting in the hall chatting

The hallways are surprisingly clean

Where is everyone???

SNOW DAY!!

My school has many students that are bussed in, so we usually have very few students at school. The staff are always here and it is a good day for everyone to catch up on work! So that is what I am doing today – catching up!!

Hoping that everyone is having a good Monday and if you are on Snow Day today – enjoy!!!

Compliments

Today’s NaBloPoMo question is: What is the last compliment that you received?

My job is filled with people complaining to me all day long. Some times it gets really annoying, but there are times when it is funny (“school is so boring” is one of my faves). As much as I would love it if my students jumped up and down and applauded my lessons, it doesn’t happen that often. But, that is fine. Can’t say that I haven’t complained about 50 times this semester with my M.Ed. course!

Anyways, so last week was Parent-Teacher interview night. Because I primarily teach students with learning disabilities, interviews can be intense at times. I wore my very best clothes, made sure to comb my hair, and was prepared with all my paperwork on how my little kiddies were doing. Before the parents arrive, I am usually a bit nervous as I don’t know what will take place during the next couple of hours.

I had a pretty booked list of interviews to complete over 2.5 hours. Most of the parents were from my Grade 9 Geography class. To be honest, I was not having a great teaching week. Actually I was having a pretty crappy teaching week. Thoughts going through my head that week were along the lines of being a crappy teacher and losing my edge that I thought I had. I even applied for some non-teaching jobs because I was in such a mood. Anyways, because of all this, my usual sense of being a strong teacher was gone. Some days I felt like nobody was noticing what I was doing with my classes and/or didn’t care.

So I had a couple of interviews down, and they were going really well. I had explained my courses, how students were doing, and having chats about what to expect next. Through all of these interviews I heard from more than a couple parents:

“You are a great teacher”

and

“My son/daughter is really enjoying your class”

So I guess some of the things that I am doing in the class are sticking with the students and making it home to the parents. My confidence was brought back to where is normally was after the interviews and it prompted me to stop thinking negatively. What I try to remember every time I want to quit is that I do my job for the students and their parents, not for anyone else.

Have a great Obama-Wednesday Everyone!

Three Things Friday – Boo!! Edition

Happy 1st of November everyone!

Since yesterday was Halloween, I shall make this week’s ‘Three Things Thursday’ all about Halloween!

Thing #1 – Max helps with trick or treating!

Ok – well not really. More like “oh my gosh, I get to sort through all these brightly coloured things!”. We didn’t really get to go trick or treating as I had orchestra and by the time we had dinner it was getting too close to the time that I needed to go. But we still dressed up Max and handed out candy!  He didn’t really like putting on the costume, he would rather play with it.

Thing #2 – Costumes at school!

I wore my Batgirl costume to school (with some layers of course). We take our costume wearing pretty seriously at my school. Most of the staff wore a costume of some sort. The best had to be Colonel Sanders for sure!

Thing #3 – Costume at orchestra!

Some of us decided to continue wearing our costumes at orchestra last night. Those of us that did got a prize from one of the trumpet players. Here is Mr. Bitey going for a ride on my cello.

2 months back at work: Life/Work Balance Advice

Well, I don’t know about you all out there but October has flown by! Tomorrow is November! Already!! Soon December will be here and Max will no longer be a ‘baby’ but move to the toddler category. If I was still on Mat leave I would be approaching my last 4 weeks of paid leave. But alas, I went back early. Today will be the 2 month mark of going back to work and leaving Max in daycare.

So – what has life been like? Well, re-read my first sentence and you will get the main idea – time goes by quickly! Every day seems like a big blur and before I know it, it is time to pick up Max. By the time I blink again, boom – Max’s bedtime. On a daily basis I feel as if I don’t have enough time. The blurriness in my day tends to stem from the fact that I feel rushed all the time. I rush in the morning, rush in my classes, rush home, rush dinner, rush rush rush! Talking to my daycare provider this afternoon, I realized that once Max starts ‘evening activities’ I will be rushed more and more.

However, in saying all that part of the reason why I feel so rushed all the time is the nature of my job. So for only a brief moment, I will talk about my job for a bit. I do not work a typical 9-5 job. Although it may appear that I only work from say 9-3:15, those are the hours that I am in front of the classroom. I actually work from 8:15-4pm and I try really really hard to get most of my work done in that time period. But, there are times when I need to do extra work. One of the most commented ‘myths of teaching’ is that I can mark/prep while teaching in the classroom. Well, whoever said that has not seen my class!  It is go, go, go for the entire period. Therefore stuff like marking and prepping for the next class(es) happens during my prep period, or at home. Somedays I have to do work at home, sometimes I don’t.

Anyhoo – the point of all this, is it isn’t easy to hold a professional job and have a baby at the same time. I very rarely have time for myself and small things like watching Parenthood or Grey’s is a “pretty big deal”. Talking to some parents on twitter however, has made me realize I am not the only one that thinks watching TV is a treat :-)  But in the last few months I have thought about how my life at home has changed.

There are some suggestions that I have for every parent who is struggling with the “Life/Work” balance:

1. Set a Routine: Routines are key in my life. I have a pretty set morning routine that gets myself and Max out of the house by 7:45 at the very latest. We also have a pretty set evening routine as well. Having a predictable routine makes these rushed times a bit easier!

2. If you can reduce your work hours: I currently only teach two classes (full-time teachers in high school teach 3). This has helped me out significantly over the past two months. I have one less class to prep and mark for, and it gives me that extra 1 hour and a bit to get ready for the next day. This set-up has saved my butt! However, I should note that about 2 times a week I do substitute for other teachers (tomorrow is one of those days), but when I sub, I don’t have to mark! (oh thank goodness!)

3. When at home, spend time with baby: My students have asked what I do at night. Well, from the hours of 4pm-7:30pm it is all about Max. I don’t do much other than play blocks and cars! I think this helps him out a bit. If I ignored him he would have a crying fit (which is common apparently). It is important that you bond and play with your child while they are young.

4. Just say no – People will always be asking you to go to things, to do something for them, or to try the next so and so. Seriously, do yourself a favour and if you are feeling stressed – Just say no! Leave some time for yourself and to get regular family and household things done. If you are stopping at McD’s too many times in the week for dinner (and not just because you have a hankering for a Big Mac) – you may be better off reducing some of your commitments and staying at home.

5. When in doubt, get off that couch! Exercise is important! So many of us get caught in that trap of sitting in front of the TV or Computer for hours. Sometimes all it takes for me to have a better day is to go for a run. So, if you are feeling sluggish – go for a walk, yoga class, toboggan ride, whatever! Just get off that couch! Note: dance parties would be fine as well!
