Yesterday and today I completed two runs during Week 1 of Half Marathon Training. Yesterday I ran a steady run and this morning was a tempo run. Since my work schedule has changed a bit, I have a bit more flexibility with going out for runs when Max is at daycare. Well most runs, I do not have much time for long runs, but those are mostly scheduled on the weekend. Most of my runs are 3-4Km for the next few weeks, which can be done in 18-25 minutes so it is easy to get a run in.
I went out for a run right at the end of school. It was 3:30pm by the time I got out and the sun was blazing. I was not a happy camper. I left my Garmin at home, and instead used Nike+ app on my iPhone to gauge my distance and time. Today’s run was just 3K (1.86 miles). My steady pace is 6:34 km/10:35miles. I stuck to this pace fairly easily. My average pace at the end was measured at 6:33 – so I was right on the money. The sun sucked though, especially the run out as the sun was directly above me and right in my face. I completed my 3K steady run in 19:40.
I am only at school for a half day today – so I was able to go for a tempo run this morning. I did a 3K tempo run with 60% of the run in “tempo mode” at 80% (5:55km/9:31 miles). Of course, I took off way too fast in tempo mode and was sitting at 5:35 which was comfortable, but at first I was at 5:00km pace (yikes). The weather was perfect. I finished the run at 18:35.
