Ottawa Tornado

Remember just over a week ago when I talked about all the tornado warnings around Ottawa – but no tornado actually happened? Well yesterday the exact opposite happened – we had a tornado but had zero warnings! At this point I don’t even know if a severe thunderstorm warning was issued. I checked all my usual weather warning twitter sites and cannot find a single warning for yesterday’s weather.

The stormy weather started just before noon when Max and I were out and about. We had to pick up P from his parents (he was mowing the lawn) and while out driving I saw some large clouds forming in Ottawa’s southern end and figured that I should boot it to pick up P. By the time we picked him up in Cumberland and made it back to Orleans a torrential downpour with lots of cloud-to-ground lightning was occurring. The rain was so heavy that at one point I could not see 10 feet in front of the car and the wipers were doing absolutely nothing. I may have said a few choice words at that point. But – we were only going home, and by the time I pulled off the highway and onto a regular street, the rain had slowed down – so it was fairly localized.

We had to go out after to pick up the car at the dealer and then go to MEC. When Max and I were at MEC, we noticed the clouds forming again, but didn’t think anything of it. We started heading home towards Orleans at 3pm and hit some massive traffic as it appeared that the clouds we saw over Westboro were now hitting Orleans and slowing traffic down. When we drove into Orleans, it was indeed raining with a few claps of thunder. This was at 4pm.

At 5pm, Max had just woken up from a nap and we were in the middle of making dinner. I heard thunder and saw lots of rain, but thought really nothing off it. P noticed that the rain was really coming down but again just thought it was nothing.

At around 5:30 last night a tornado touched down at Pine View Golf Course at Blair Road, by the 174/417 highway split (exactly where I was driving before). This is only a 5 minute drive from my house and less than 10K away. Pretty close!  You know the bike routes we frequent often? Really close to that area. (Google map below – I live around point A – tornado occurred at point B)

Crazy weather! I know tornados and such may be a small deal in some of your parts – but they only occur sometimes here in the Ottawa valley. The storm last week was all “ahhhhh storm is coming! Ahhh tornadoes!” with hours notice – yesterday afternoon was nothing! Funny thing – my “tornado” sixth sense was totally off and usually I am right/know that a tornado has/will be occuring. Nothing yesterday at all! Bad geography teacher!

Have you ever seen/experienced a tornado?

Do you have tornado warnings often?

Do you golf?

Whoah! That is crazy scary and nuts! I have never been in a tornado or saw one. They are not too common in my areas, either. Glad you are all safe 🙂

Yikes! It’s crazy when something terrible happens right where you were moments (or hours) ago.
Michigan had lots of tornado warnings/touchdowns. I didn’t ever see any myself, though.
