I am in the process of writing a 2013 Guide to Fall Races for the Ottawa Race – If you know of any races beyond Somersault races and The Army Run, please let me know by emailing me at runningfoodbaby at gmail dot com.
In the meantime – I was emailed about an event in Toronto that sounds like a great race to sign up for. The 4th Annual B&O Yorkville Run is to be held on September 8th, 2013 – right in the middle of the Toronto Film Festival. The race is in support of the YWCA Toronto, with runners, local businesses and other sponsors helping raise funds for a great cause. The YWCA Toronto helps women in need in many different ways, from providing shelter and help for women fleeing violent situations, enhancing skills, finding housing and working on employment opportunities. I have had several students involved with both the YMCA and YWCA over the years and know that they help many people in need.
The 5KM race was named Canada’s fastest 5K for three consecutive years – meaning that this will be a fast race! Wesley Korir, winner of the 2012 Boston Marathon, won the 2011 and 2012 Yorkville races. The race takes runners through Yorkville, down Yonge Street and through the University of Toronto. Having lived in Toronto for many years, I know that the race features some of the best urban scenery one could ask for in a race. Also, since the Toronto Film Festival will be occurring over that weekend, you will be right in the middle of all the action! You never know when you will see a celebrity (I almost saw Brad Pitt once)!
Even more exciting is the gear and other goodies you receive just for registering. This year’s race kit includes:
– Timing Chip
– Tech T-shirt
– K-Way Jacket!!
– Protein Shaker
– Many other samples/coupons!
I am always a fan of great race kits that pretty much go beyond the price of registering for a race. I’m usually sold on a good tech shirt!
There are also many prizes available for the top fundraisers, including gift certificates for local restaurants, running shoes and even a Lexus rental for a month!
Are you sold yet? Well there is more. When you finish the race, you will be served après-run hors d’oeuvres by white gloved waiters, courtesy of Yorkville Restaurants. How cool is that? Kind of beats the usual bagel and a banana!
If you are now salivating at the thought of great food being served at the finish, or seeing yourself in a K-Way – you might want to go directly to the race website and register. The race is limited to 1000 participants and as off this morning, they only had about 70 spots left! So – go to www.yorkvillerun.com and sign up! Go run a great race, support a great cause, and be in the middle of the red carpet at the Toronto Film Festival!
Although the event was brought to my attention via event organizers I was not compensated in any way or form in writing this blog post. I feel that as a local running blogger, it is part of my mission to share details about really cool running events in the Ottawa/Toronto areas.
