OC Transpo

So yesterday I spent quite a large portion of my day on the OC Transpo bus system and had several adventures. I was planning on writing an ‘adventures on the OC’ post today, but that will no longer happen.

This morning a double-decker bus collided with a VIA Rail (Canada’s passenger rail) train, killing 6 people and injuring over 30 passengers. I won’t post any pictures on here – but go to any major news source and you will see the damage to the bus. The bus was an express bus from the suburb of Barrhaven to the downtown core, mainly using the transitway (bus road). We have only one train line here in Ottawa, so most people take a bus. Many people take the bus downtown because it is just crazy to drive. If I didn’t have Max, I would be taking the bus to work since there is a bus that takes me from door to door.

School was a bit weird today. Especially since we were only about 3KM away from the accident yesterday with the class. I spent over 2 hrs on the bus yesterday, not thinking that anything bad would happen, other than people getting in my personal bubble. As many of us stated today, 6 people left home today to go to work. They will not be making it to work, nor will they be returning home.

Even more odd – in my night class last night (I’m in grad school), we had a full on discussion about the habits and behaviours of OC Transpo express passengers from the suburbs (including talking about the double decker bus). Now, I am sure that the behaviours of those passengers has changed for the time being. I will also say that probably for the first time, people did not rush to try and get to the front seat on the top of the bus.

I am an OC Transpo rider on a regular basis. I can’t say that my bus riding will ever be the same.

Thinking of the six people who lost their lives and their families and friends tonight…..

Wow. This is so sad. My thoughts are with their families.
