All around the blogger-world are posts about what to buy for your running-friend for Christmas. I have already written two blog posts in 2012 and 2013 about what to buy your special someone who happens to be a runner – so I will not repeat with the same items. But, what I will showcase this year are five races that I think you might consider wrapping up and placing under the tree for the runner in your life. Races are really expensive and many runners want to register for lots of races – but budgets are in the way. I would totally love getting a ‘bib’ for Christmas. Some races (like Rock n’ Roll and Canada Running Series) even offer race packages and gift certificates.
1) Canada Running Series
The folks at Canada Running Series are the ones behind Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront marathon, The Yonge Street 10K and many more races (including a few in Montreal and Vancouver). The races they put on are known to be really great events with lots of action. There is something for everyone – from 5K’s to marathons. CRS also has gift certificates available – so that you can allow your gift receiver to choose their own race/distance.
2) Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series
The Rock ‘n’ Roll series are all over North America and in a few European countries as well. There are lots of events to choose from, including Montreal, Seattle, Las Vegas (very popular and it looks amazing!) and a return in 2015 to Brooklyn. The RnR group also has a Tourpass where you can pay a certain amount of money and run either 3 races (at a discount) OR pay $449 and get to run in any 2015 North American race that you want. If you have the means to travel, that can be an exciting way to fill up your 2015 season! Remember that most half and full marathons cost $100+, so if you do more than 4 races a year, this could be a great present!
3) Ottawa Race Weekend
You have to have known that I would mention the Ottawa Race Weekend? It is a great race with many options. It is a really big event for Ottawa, and we love all the visitors that come in for the weekend. The 5K and 10K are on the Saturday, and the half and full marathons are on the Sunday. But if you want to purchase a half marathon bib for your running buddy, hurry up – as of Dec. 5 it was 93% sold out!
4) Destination Race
There are plenty of really cool destination races out there. Races in Napa Valley, Big Sur International Marathon , Paris, Berlin all come to mind. Maybe find out what destination race your running buddy wants to do and help out their dreams by purchasing a bib. Although it would be wise to make sure they can get to the destination first. Also – some races are a lottery process, so you might have to go through that first.
5) Make up an ‘IOU’
Sometimes it can be hard to purchase a race for your running person. You are not sure about training schedules, what they are already signed up for, or if they even want to run anything longer than 5K. Also, if there is registration involved, you need some crucial information to fill out the registration. So, if this applies to you – you can easily make an IOU for your runner and decorate it all Christmas-like. Present their gift on Christmas and say “let me know what race you would like to do”. You might want to add ‘within reason’ as some races are expensive. You know the North Pole Marathon is over $11,000 right 😉
