Five Things Friday – 5 Items you should try at Trader Joe’s

Happy Friday – actually I’m not sure it is happy because it marks the end of March Break. Another week that goes by way too fast!

In the past month, I was lucky enough to go to Trader Joe’s twice, once in Buffalo, NY and once in Burlington, VT. Trader Joe’s can be a bit different depending on what state you are in, especially if you are looking for “2 Buck Chuck”. In New York State you will not find the super cheap $2.99 bottle of Trader Joe’s wine, but in Vermont you will!

There are a number of items that I buy every time I go to Trader Joe’s. Usually I will buy some cereal, coffee, BBQ sauces, veggie stix chips, and cookies. If I’m able to go directly home afterwards, I will buy some frozen items, including Mandarin Chicken. I might have left the Vermont store with every bag of that delicious chicken dinner.

Honestly, there isn’t an item I haven’t enjoyed from Trader Joe’s yet. Here are five items I think you should try if you happen to be in a Trader Joe’s soon:

  1. Crunchy Cinnamon Squares

I was able to find this cereal in the Buffalo store, but could not find it in the Vermont location much to my disappointment. This cereal is amazing and better than the other ‘name brand’ variety. Full of cinnamon flavour, but not overpowering. If anyone happens to be at a TJ’s and can find this cereal – pick me up a box (or three?).

2. Cilantro Salad Dressing

A random find in the salad section. This item does need to be kept cool, so you will need to consider that if going on a long trip/airplane ride. This dressing is perfect for a fresh summer salad, Taco Salad or on top of a burrito bowl. You obviously must enjoy cilantro to enjoy this dressing, but it also has a hint of garlic. I made a chicken wrap and added some of this dressing to it: I devoured the wrap very quickly!

3. Blanched Almond Flour

I don’t know how much Almond flours costs in other grocery stores in the US, but in Canada the only small package of almond flour I’ve been able to find has cost over $16. I still have to check Costco for a cheaper alternative, but this Trader Joe’s, sorry Baker Josef’s version is only $7.99. That is a steal of a deal and worked perfectly for my Superhero Muffins.

#4 Cuban Black Beans

I have an embarrassing amount of Cuban Black Bean cans in my pantry. Actually in both pantries you will find a stockpile of my favourite black beans. The TJ Cuban Black beans are perfect for beans and rice, burrito bowls, tacos, chili or anything else you can think of. They have a hint of spice to them but not super spicy. The can of beans costs 99 cents, which is a pretty standard price for black beans.

#5 Chocolate Chip Sandwich Cookies

I haven’t been able to find my fave cookies – Belgium chocolate crispy cookies lately, but the newest TJ cookie is just as good. These mini chocolate chip cookies are crispy cookies with a yummy chocolate middle. I may have ate the whole bag in a less than a week and bought another one in Vermont. Even the cashier noted that the cookies are highly addictive.
